Festive fiends manual

Dec 23, 2025

This Christmas, meet the festive fiends that lurk in your inbox and networks, from gift hoarding Gonks to mischievous Gingerbread. Our Christmas manual is your visual guide to the yuletide cyber creatures of today’s threat landscape.

Each fiend comes with its tricks, traits and tell tale signs, plus the tools you need to stay safe, because the best way to survive a cyber winter wonderland is to know your fiends before they unwrap your data.

Gingerbread

Sweet, charming, and deceptively quick, the Gingerbread sneaks into your inbox, eager to nibble on your most treasured secrets. Unlike random, clumsy phishing attempts, this cookie carefully chooses its targets, wrapping its messages in a festive disguise to trick you into giving up credentials, financial information, or personal details. One wrong click, and your data is at risk of being eaten.

Weaknesses:

Icing (a.k.a. awareness + verification).

Icing = Awareness!

The more you have, the harder it is for the Gingerbread to bite your data.

How to fend them off:

  • Decorate with digital icing: Always verify the sender before clicking, even if the email looks familiar.
  • Shine Christmas lights: Encourage your team to hover over links and report anything suspicious.
  • Stay protected: Use phishing simulation and training to make sure your employees can spot the Gingerbread before it nibbles your data.

Gonk

Small, quirky and surprisingly persistent. The Gonk sneaks into your systems and refuses to leave. It spreads silently, infecting files, devices and networks, thriving on unpatched software and digital clutter. One careless click or overlooked update and the Gonk can turn your network into a chaotic mess that lingers long after the festivities.

Weaknesses:

Post-festive clean up (a.k.a. updates + antivirus).

Malware is like the chaos of Christmas; one snowflake and a flurry is imminent.

How to stop the Gonk:

  • Sweep the corners: Use endpoint protection and regular scans to make sure the Gonk doesn't sneak back in.
  • Tidy your systems: Patch software and devices regularly to remove vulnerabilities.
  • Don’t leave clutter lying around: Avoid downloading unknown attachments or connecting to mystery networks.

Snowman

At first glance, the Snowman looks like a cheerful member of the team, blending in with the festive crowd. However, when opportunity strikes, or under the glow of twinkling lights, they reveal a frosty malicious side, abusing access or bypassing controls. These threats are hard to detect, changing their shape to exploit trust from within.

Weaknesses:

Melting (a.k.a. visibility + access control).

When a Snowman melts its true form is revealed, similarly to the disguise of insider threats.

How to stop the Snowman:

  • Keep them in the warmth: Enforce least-privilege access so risky activity can’t hide.
  • Watch for drips: Monitor user activity for unusual behaviour or sudden changes.
  • Listen to the cracking ice: Encourage reporting and transparency when something feels “off”.

Elf

Elusive and unpredictable, the Elf makes your files vanish without warning, whether deleted, misplaced or spirited away. It strikes silently, leaving gaps, confusion and potential chaos beneath the Christmas tree.

Weaknesses:

Wrapping paper (a.k.a. backups + encryption).

An Elf can’t steal what’s safely wrapped and stored.

How to banish the Elf:

  • Wrap your data: Encrypt sensitive files.
  • Keep extra wrapping paper handy: Back up important files regularly and test your recovery plan.
  • Close the chimney: Limit data access and use data loss prevention tools to stop files from disappearing.
